Lymphoedema is a form of swelling and tissue change due to insufficiency of the lymphatic system

signs and symptoms:

  • heaviness, aching, feeling of fullness

  • tight clothing/jewelry

  • change in skin texture

  • observable swelling

body parts affected:

  • arms & hands

  • legs & feet

  • head & neck

  • chest & trunk

  • genitals


  • due to an inherited or congenital deficiency of the lymphatic system

  • following removal of or trauma/ treament to lymph nodes (frequently following breast, gynae, skin and prostate cancers)

treatment includes:

  • exercise, including breathing exercises

  • lymph massage

  • bandaging

  • compression garments

  • kinesiotaping

  • education about risk reduction and lifestyle modification
